Honor your Mother

Although Mother’s Day has passed, it is never too late to thank and appreciate mothers.  Whether on good or strained terms, God implores us to cherish our mothers.

Mothers give us their love from the moment of conception.  The bond between mother and child is so strong that even in the womb, the baby’s heart beats a little faster at the sound of mom’s voice.

Our Blessed Mother elevated the role of motherhood.  She is Jesus’ mother.  She loved him, nursed him, and taught him as any mother should.  However, she was a mother who loved from the depths of her soul.  She participated in her son’s sufferings as a small child to a crucified victim.  Mary partook in God’s plan for our salvation.

Of course, our own mothers do their part; not equal to Mary’s ways, but in a unique way which is also in God’s plan.  For those who are not close to their moms, please for the sake of the Gospel, revere her.  She is not perfect and not without sin but, she did participate in God’s plan to give you life.

Moms do not have all the answers, are not always runway beautiful, or say all the right things. I am sure, though, they deeply love their children.  The Lord says, “No one hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as also Christ does the church: because we are members of him, body, of his flesh and of his bones.” (Ephesians 5:29-30)

Although most people hear this verse during a wedding ceremony, I feel it aptly describes the relationship between mother and child.  No mother can hate her own flesh, her own child.  Even if the mother has gone astray, she still feels a connection to her child.  If your mother is less than perfect, pray for her.  We are all sinners. Better still, ask Our Lady to heal the wound in your heart.

Therefore, we should honor our heavenly Mother and our earthly mother.  Why?  Because the Lord in all his wisdom knew it would be best. The Lord tells us to honor our parents so we can enjoy a long life.

“Honor your father and mother, as the Lord they God has commanded thee, that you may live a long time, and it may be well with you in the land which the Lord thy God will give thee,” according to Deuteronomy 5:16.

Wow!  That is a strong statement.  God so wants us to honor our mothers and fathers so much that he attaches blessings to it: a long life and that “it may be well with you.”  I feel fortunate that I have a beautiful mother and mother-in-law.

If you do not have a loving relationship with your mother, begin by invoking your mother in heaven. She loves us all so much.  In one of her messages in Medjugorje, Our Lady states, “If you knew how much I love you, you would cry for joy.”

Again, heartfelt words from a mom who loves her children so much.  Even St. Therese, the Little Flower, as she is known said, “She is more mother than queen.”  St. Therese lost her mother at the age of 4, still she did not despair.  She turned even more fervently to Our Heavenly Mother.  Her older sisters also “mothered” her.

Although Mother’s Day comes once a year, honor your heavenly and earthly mother every day! This can be done in many ways: praying the rosary, reading the bible, or visiting/phoning our mothers often.  Your efforts will not go unrewarded in heaven.
