Pray; Listen; Wait

Seven times he said, “Go, look again!” (1 Kings 18: 41-46)

Two weeks ago we celebrated Pentecost. Within the next week the school year ended and life has taken on a whole new energy.

What do we do with all this energy? How do we even begin to tap into the grace filled energy of the Holy Spirit? How can I even be sure that the energy is there for me?

The answer to these questions is simple and difficult at the same time.

The answer: pray; listen; and wait.

Pray: Probably the easiest part, maybe.

We need to dedicate time to spend with God, to clear our minds and hearts; to open ourselves up to God and give our hopes, dreams and desires to Him. Give thanks for everything; the good and the bad; the joys and the trials.

Now comes what for some may be harder: Listen and Wait, or Wait and Listen.

No matter what order this is very difficult for me. I’d venture to say many of us struggle with waiting and listening. In our hectic, result-driven world, we expect instant response and gratification. We don’t want to admit God doesn’t work that way. So we stop waiting, stop listening; decide to struggle through on our own.

Patience is not one of my strong suits. I’m sure many others struggle with this. Maybe one of the things we need to pray for in Step One: Patience. Let Gods will be done in His time.

If we step aside and let the Holy Spirit in, even through the smallest of openings, God’s answers will reveal themselves in a most miraculous way. It may not be what we expect or the exact answer we wanted, but it will be what God wants for us, what will be best for us. Like the loving parent He is, His answer will be what we need most.

Prayer opens the door to the grace of God. Listening and Waiting opens us to the miraculous wonders of what He will do in our lives.

Pray; listen; and wait.
