Have you ever been given the perfect opportunity to share your faith but could not think of the right words to say? Later, the right words come to us, but the moment passes, the opportunity gone.
When you struggle to find the right words, take a step back and let the cross do the talking. Christ’s actions on the cross will do more than our words could ever do.
In 1 Corinthians, St. Paul tells us,
“For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human eloquence, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning.” -1 Corinthians 1:17, NAB
This can be difficult for me. I enjoy sharing the Gospel through the written word. I love telling others about my love for Christ in open conversation. Removing myself from the equation can be difficult.
But if St. Paul, who is obviously one of the most important Christian writers of all time, can learn to remain humble and let the cross do the talking, so can I.
We all have to remember our purpose and focus when sharing the faith. It’s not about what we accomplish, but what Christ accomplishes through us.
Great preachers can rouse stadiums full of people. Great writers can mold a generation through the written word. But through the cross, Christ re-shaped the world forever, and the work of any one man or woman could never hold a candle to that.
Some may not be naturally good at sharing their faith through the written or spoken word at all, and this verse should give us hope. It shows us that regardless of our skills or talents, Jesus can work through anyone.
You do not have to write a book or start a blog to share the Gospel.
You do not have to stand on stage to help people hear God’s voice.
You do not have to memorize the entire Bible to share what it means to you.
The only thing any of us need to do is to open our hearts and let the cross do the talking. Just open your mouth and let Christ be your voice.
