Ordinary Men

For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. (1 Corinthians 1: 26-29)

Twelve ordinary men. I could talk about the significance of twelve. I could talk about how they turned the world upside down after the first Pentecost, and those are important things.

However, what I want to discuss is twelve ordinary men; fishermen, tax collectors, rabble rousers, not a religious authority among them.

And yet Jesus chose them. He didn’t chose the Pharisees, the Sadducees. He didn’t suck up to the Roman authorities. Instead He hung out with fishermen, tax collectors and trouble makers. People just like you and me.

We are like the original twelve are ordinary people, with ordinary lives. Daily we face situations and people that distract us from God and His message. But like those twelve ordinary men, God sees in us the potential to rise above our ordinary lives and be like the apostles after Pentecost, setting the world on fire with their faith.

It’s pretty amazing when you think about it, how God takes an ordinary life and molds it into something more. Something that if we are open to the moving of the Holy Spirit, will change us from the ordinary to the extraordinary. And like the twelve apostles, God has chosen us to continue to spread the fire of His love.

Yes, we will falter, lions will challenge us, crosses will be thrust upon us, but the Holy Spirit will guide us through. God will not forsake us, but will continue to forgive us, to save us, to claim us as his own.

You may be a housewife, a mother, a father, a writer, an accountant, anything that you can name. It may not seem like you have anything that God can use.

I write fantasy novels and am currently working on a video game when I’m not busy trying to figure out is rewarded play legit, and there are some days that I think what can God do with this. I mean, video games, really?  How can God use video games? Guess what that’s not up to me. God knows what He can do with them. He knew what to do with a fisherman, a tax collector. Why wouldn’t He know what to do with me or you?

God has chosen us, but it is up to us to let Him in, let Him do His molding, let Him teach us. It is only when we leave ourselves open to the Holy Spirit that God can begin to do His work through us, the ordinary people.

My point here is; don’t settle for ordinary. Be open to the Holy Spirit. Let God set fire to your soul.
