Angel of God, My Guardian Dear

Some time ago, the good sisters in Catholic schools would tell their students to “make room for their guardian angels.” In doing so the sisters were reinforcing the Church’s belief that our angels are always with us and watching us.  However, it seems this very important belief is almost non-existent today.

While in distress, we often forget to call on the beings that the good Lord entrusted our souls to – our guardian angels.  Seems we negate the belief we once had as a children; calling on our angels.

We’ll never know how many times a day our guardian angels come to our assistance.  As the Oct. 2 Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels approaches, let us renew the practice of praying to and thanking our guardian angel with this famous prayer.

“Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”

How little we know about our angel’s power and humility before God.  The attributes of our guardian angels are many.  Not only do they protect us from harm, but they are given the gift to help us to do good, give us inspirations, adore at mass, and defend us from the attacks of the devil. In addition, they also are with the dying.

Saints give us a glimpse at the power of guardian angels.  We can take a lesson from the saints who honored their angels.

“Be good. This will make your angel happy.  When sorrows and misfortunes, physical or spiritual, afflict you, turn to your guardian with strong trust and he will help you,” St. John Bosco.

St. Pio would often watch over his spiritual children from a distance, with the help of their guardian angel. The Franciscan friar also would send his angel to others when he could not see them personally, according to Send Me Your Guardian Angel, by Fr. Alessio Parente, OFM Cap.

Guardian angels have often offered physical help. People often saw angels help St. Isidore the farmer plow the fields to make up work missed while he was at mass.

During temptations, our guardian angel protects and defends us.  “Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him; he trembles and flees at the sight of your guardian angel,” advised St. John Bosco.  The saint spoke daily to his angel.

St. Pio who was afflicted by scourges from the devil, always looked to his guardian angel for added protection.  He also warned his angel not to leave him unprotected.

Guardian angels are especially close to children, according to the Lord.  “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father,” Mt. 18:10.

They are such a special gift to us from God.  In the apparitions at Fatima, a being presented himself as the guardian angel of Portugal and taught Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta a prayer most pleasing to God.

“Fear not! I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me!” The angel knelt on the ground and bowed very low. The children did likewise and repeat this prayer three times: “My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I beg pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You.” Then he rose and said: “Pray this way. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications.” (source)

Remember to pray daily the Guardian Angel prayer.
