Love is patient, love is kind. It bears all things, believes all things, endures all things. (1 Corinthians 13:7)
We thank you Lord for this bountiful harvest and the opportunity to share it. May God Continue to bless all of us. Thank you Lord for a love that never fails.
The first part; verses from Corinthians, is Paul telling us about love of God and love for God. We hear this verse and the verses surrounding it at many a wedding ceremony.
The second part; a prayer that I was asked to write and deliver before the meal at my son’s wedding several years ago. Shared along with the verse I asked for blessings on my son and his new bride as well as the people gathered to celebrate with them.
Last night this chapter from Corinthians came to me in a dream. This morning these verses were repeated in the second reading at mass. Godcidentally this reminder came to me at the beginning of February, the month when the church along with the country celebrates love and marriage.
So in today’s mixed up world, how do we take these words of Paul, of God and apply them to our own lives? I’m not sure I have all the answers, or any of the answers. I am a lost sheep searching for God’s love and substituting the insufficient ways of the world.
Once realized and embraced God’s perfect love makes the worlds pale in comparison. God’s love for His Son and Church (Us) should be reflected in our marriages, in our relationships, in our reaching for His love.
The first three verses tell us that love is the most important. It reminds us that speaking in tongues, having prophetic powers, understanding all the mysteries and all the knowledge, having faith to move mountains; all these are nothing without love. Nothing compares to love and is useless without it.
Everything Paul shares in these verses points to love as the most important, the greatest of all. If we look to 1 Peter 4:8, Peter reiterates this:
Above all hold unfailing your love for one another since love covers a multitude of sins.
If we move to Hebrews 13:1-8 we are reminded that there are different types of love; The types of love; brotherly love, love of strangers, marital love and finally remaining free from the love of material things. They all are equally important and many times can be intertwined. As we contemplate love in all these forms, the question we need to ask in any given situation is: Which situation will make love grow the most? When we think this way we are inviting the Holy Spirit to guide our decisions.
Let…love continues. (Hebrews 13:1) Love trumps everything and if we keep that in the forefront of our hearts it will compel us to reach out to other people and keep us close to God.
