For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to the flesh, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth; but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise. God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong. God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no flesh might boast in the presence of God. (1 Corinthians 1: 26-29)
Twelve ordinary men. I could talk about the significance of twelve, I could talk about how they turned the world upside down after Pentecost and those are important things. However what I want to discuss is twelve ordinary men; fishermen, tax collectors, rabble rousers, not a religious authority among them. And yet Jesus chose them. He didn’t chose the pharisees, the saducees. He didn’t suck up to the Roman authorities. Inst3ead He hung out with those fishermen, tax collectors and troublemakers. People just like you and me.
We like the original twelve are ordinary people, with ordinary lives. Daily we face situations and people that distract us from God and His message. But like those twelve ordinary men, God sees in us the potential to rise above our ordinary lives and be like the apostles after Pentecost, setting the world on fire with their faith.
It’s pretty amazing when you think about it; how God takes an ordinary life and molds it into something more. Something, that we are open to the moving of the Holy Spirit that will change us from the ordinary to the extraordinary. And like the twleve apostles, God has chosen us to continue to spread the fire of His love.
Yes, we will falter, lions will challenge us, crosses will be thrust upon us, but the Holy Spirit will guide us through. God will not forsake us, but continue to forgive, to save, to claim us as His own.
I guess my point here is; Don’t settle for ordinary. Be open to the Holy Spirit. Let Him set fire to your soul.
